Upholstery Care Tips

The wear and tear suffered by most furniture, while a common part of everyday life, can leave your prized possessions looking unkept, dirty and scruffy. There is, however, a lot you can do to keep your upholstery looking new for longer, particularly if you follow these 5 steps.

Step 1: Choose the Right Upholstery Fabric

Certain fabrics are more delicate and tend to stain easily. Synthetic fabrics are some of the best options whereas light cotton or linen can be more difficult to clean.
While faux silk, or viscose, look nice… we would suggest trying to avoid them. They are difficult to remove stains from and are sensitive to liquids. Too much liquid can cause its fabric to swell and burst, forever ruining your nice piece.

Step 2: Rotate Cushions

Sofa’s and sitting chairs experience a lot of traffic, so rotating and flipping the cushions on your sofa will help to ensure even wear, helping the upholstery looking newer for longer.

Step 3: Remove Spills as Quickly as Possible

The longer a liquid food or sticky substance is left on the upholstery, the more difficult it is to remove. When there is a liquid spill, act fast and blot excess liquid with a sponge or clean white cloth. Do not agitate/rub the stain because you run the risk of embedding it deeper into the fabric.

For substance stains such as mud, start by allowing the mud to dry, give it gentle brushing, and vacuuming up any loose particles.

For sticky stains such as gum, place ice in a plastic bag and rub over the sticky spot until it hardens. Then use a knife to loosen the sticky substance from the upholstery. Vacuum the area to remove any loose particles. Finally blot the stain with a clean white cloth and the cleaning solution to remove it from the upholstery. Be careful not to damage the fabric, or rather call us first. We have machinery and solutions specifically designed for gum, glue, and sticky residues.

Step 4: Regular Cleaning

Upholstered furniture is expensive and a critical part of any home. Scheduling regular cleaning will keep your upholstered furniture looking new for longer.
