What's the Difference Between Cleaning, Sanitising and Disinfecting Carpets?

What is the difference between Cleaning, Sanitising and Disinfecting Carpets?
We all like the idea of a sparkling clean home or office and with the current focus on COVID-19 free spaces, we’ve had many customers contacting us to help them with deep cleaning.
It is, however, important to differentiate between Cleaning, Sanitising and Disinfecting so that you know exactly what each process consists of and so you don’t get caught by marketing wording that isn’t true.

1. Professional Carpet or Rug Cleaning

Professional cleaning is when a professional cleaner uses cleaning products and machinery to remove dirt and stains from rugs and carpets.

The products we use to professionally clean carpets result in a visible difference in the appearance of the carpet, removing stains and dirt. They are gentle on the environment and do not leave a chemical residue in your home or office that could aggravate lung conditions such as asthma.

It is important to note that while carpet cleaning is important to remove allergens such as dust and pollen, merely cleaning a carpet does not sanitise it.

2. Sanitising Carpets or Rugs

Sanitising is to remove and kill unwanted and harmful microbes and elements. In the case of carpets and rugs this includes bacteria, mould, and harmful aspects contained in urine, faeces and vomit - often as a result of pet accidents.

Sanitising your carpet or rug can only be done properly by professionals because it requires a combination of heat, industrial cleaning products, professional knowledge and industrial equipment to properly remove harmful elements from your rug or carpet.

With over 20 years’ experience in rug and carpet cleaning and with a range of professional cleaning products and machinery, we are able to sanitise your home or office to exceptionally high levels.

3. Disinfecting Your Carpet or Rug

There are a wide range of carpet cleaning companies and carpet cleaning product manufactures making claims that they can disinfect your carpets or rugs.

Disinfecting means to kill microbes and bacteria and can only be achieved through the use of harsh chemicals such as bleach.

The truth is that no soft surface can be disinfected (United States Environmental Protection Agency | US EPA) as the chemicals it requires would damage the soft surface. Sanitising carpets and rugs do, however, remove harmful elements from your home or office. Regular cleaning and sanitising of your home or office carpets helps to ensure a healthier space and is an important routine to implement.
